Stiemke: Local volunteers had major impact in 2013

Recently, 84 local nonprofit organizations completed a survey for the Volunteer Center. The survey showed these organizations engaged over 41,600 volunteers last year.

These same volunteers completed just over one million hours of service. The impact of a million volunteer hours is more than $23 million! Volunteers do make a difference. Kudos to those that help. Forty-one percent of the surveyed organizations said they need more volunteers. Can you help? These are a few opportunities posted on www.volunteercentermchenrycounty.org.

Home of the Sparrow is looking for event volunteers to help with their “Phantom of the Opera” themed annual gala fundraiser. The event includes house tours of the Sanfilippo Estate, dinner, a silent auction, organ concert, and a magical ride on the estate’s famous carousel. Volunteers will assist with guest check-in, coat check, silent auction, checkout and other various tasks throughout the evening.

JourneyCare is looking for volunteers to get involved at their Woodstock site. Become part of their team – greet visitors, answer phones and help with general light office duties.

Parent’s Day Out is looking for bilingual volunteers to teach basic Spanish to children.

Volunteer Center McHenry County is looking for a volunteer team of five or six volunteers to run the food area at the Human Race on April 27.

Remember to check the wish lists that agencies post. Here are few items needed: art supplies, birthday favors, books, and backpacks.

Lined up for 9 to 10:30 a.m. April 1 at the Volunteer Center is a Volunteer Recognition workshop. Participants will discover some creative ideas at minimal cost to show their volunteers that they are appreciated, and noticed. To register, visit volunteercentermchenrycounty.org.

The fourth annual McHenry County Human Race is April 27. This is a 5K walk/run supporting more than 55 charities serving McHenry County. Each race participant designates which charity will receive the proceeds of their race fee. More information at mchumanrace.org.
