CRYSTAL LAKE – A fire in a cottage at 1600 North Ave. displaced a family of four, the Crystal Lake Fire Department said.

The fire left about $20,000 in damage. The fire is under investigation, but appears to have been caused by unattended cooking, according to a news release.

Firefighters responded at 3:50 p.m. and had the fire under control in about 20 minutes, said Battalion Chief Chris Olsen.

The American Red Cross was called to assist the family of four, Olsen said. No one was hurt.

Firefighters from Cary, McHenry Township, Nunda Rural, Huntley, Lakewood, Wonder Lake, Fox River Grove and Algonquin-Lake in the Hills assisted on the call. There are no hydrants in the area.
