Brey will replace Director of Police and Public Safety James Wales, who is planning to retire on April 30.
"Chief Brey's knowledge, experience and leadership skills impressed impressed upon me that he is ready for the challenge of leading our police department and providing the residents of Lake in the Hills the excellent public safety services they have come to expect," Village President Paul Mulcahy said in a news release.
Brey was one of three people to interview for the job. Mary Frake, who is the chief of Support Services, and Patrol Officer Christopher Miller also interviewed for the job, Mulcahy said.
Brey has been with the department since 1992. He became a sergeant in 2001 and chief of patrol services in 2006.

His appointment to police chief is expected to be approved by the Village Board on March 27.
"I am honored to be selected to serve the residents of Lake in the Hills as Chief of Police," Brey said.
