Liar, liar pants on ice
To the Editor:
Rush Limbaugh’s recent denial of the polar vortex (he said it’s a “liberal plot”) brought to mind his past criticism of a teacher SEDOM who had her students study American Sign Language (ASL).
Neurologists and educators believe that children with communication challenges benefit from learning ASL.
As a motivational device and reward, the teacher made a video recording of her students’ signing, and sent it to researchers in California who had spent years studying Koko, a lowland gorilla whose ability to learn ASL had been widely reported in scientific journals.
Rush shamefully lambasted the teacher, claiming this was what was wrong with American education: wasting money talking to monkeys.
Rush apparently made no effort to learn the facts.
One wonders what other toxic, negative “truths” are accepted by his listeners when they are not privy to the facts?
However, this winter we have suffered the hard, cold facts. The polar vortex, a fictitious plot, Rush? Liar, liar, pants on fire.
Rush’s rants have made him a very rich entertainer, and our Constitution gives him the right, of course, but his toxic lies and demeanor poison the waters of public discourse, sew divisiveness, and encourage emotion and bias over thought.
Perhaps Rush should sit in a snow bank with those fiery pants of his to more directly experience the polar vortex and to cool the part of him that generates so many bad ideas.
