Northwest Herald All-Area Wrestling Team announced

First Team

Gavin Sutton (42-5)

Richmond-Burton, fr., 113 pounds

Sutton, the only freshman on the first team, finished third at Class 2A state after winning the Hampshire Regional and placing second at the Lakes Sectional.

Michael Cullen (29-6)

Cary-Grove, jr., 120 pounds

Cullen battled injuries for most of the year and moved up a weight class at the end of the year. He won the Fox Valley Conference Tournament and placed fifth at state.

Grant Sutton (38-2)

Richmond-Burton, jr., 126 pounds

Sutton reached the state finals for the first time where he placed second. His two losses this season were both against Montini’s Kegan Calkins, one in the sectional semifinals and one in the state championship match.

Michael Petersen (37-7)

Crystal Lake Central, so., 132 pounds

Petersen placed third at state after winning the Lakes Sectional. He made it to the state semifinals before getting bumped to the consolation bracket.

Nick Gil (44-3)

Crystal Lake South, sr., 138 pounds  

Gil placed fifth at state after winning the Barrington Sectional. In December, Gil won the prestigious Al Dvorak Invitational at Harlem in Machesney Park.

Eric Barone (41-6)

Crystal Lake South, jr., 145 pounds

Barone won the FVC Tournament, McHenry Regional and Barrington Sectional leading up to state where he placed fifth.

Nick Remke (33-5)

Marian Central, jr., 145 pounds

Remke won the Richmond-Burton and Harvard tournaments during the season and placed third at state.

Garrett Sutton (44-0)

Richmond-Burton, sr., 160 pounds

Sutton, the Northwest Herald Wrestler of the Year, won his second state title and was unbeaten the past two season.

Kyle Fugiel (31-3)

Crystal Lake Central, sr., 170 pounds

Fugiel placed for the first time at state with a third-place finish. He avenged a loss against Lincoln-Way West’s Javier Montalvo in the championship quarterfinals by pinning Montalvo in the third place match.

Mike Zelasco (42-4)

Crystal Lake Central, sr., 182 pounds

Zelasco placed second at state and reached the finals for the first time. He won the Hampshire Regional and Lakes Sectional heading into state.

Christian Brunner (43-5)

Dundee-Crown, so., 182 pounds

Brunner was the first Chargers’ wrestler to reach the finals in Class 3A where he placed second. In the semifinals, Brunner beat top seeded Alex Benoit from Marist, in tiebreakers.

Andrew Marsden (43-2)

Crystal Lake Central, jr., 195 pounds

Marsden pinned his way to his first state title with four falls in his four state matches. He overcame a Lakes Sectional final loss to Montini’s Anthony Ferraro and pinned him in the finals in 1:32.

Luis Hernandez (37-2)

McHenry, sr., 220 pounds

Hernandez was out the latter part of the season with an injury but came back strong to place second at state.

Adam Freimund (42-3)

Harvard, sr., 285 pounds

Freimund placed for the first time at state with a fifth-place finish. He also led his team to an Antioch Dual Team Sectional win and a trip to dual team state.

McHenry, jr., 106 pounds
