Sheriff's police investigate St. Charles Township shooting

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A man who broke into a home Monday in unincorporated St. Charles Township was shot by the homeowner, said Lt. Pat Gengler, Kane County Sheriff's Office spokesperson

Few details were available early Monday afternoon as authorities continued their investigation, but Gengler assured the public that there was no public safety risk.

"We found him right away," he said.

Sheriff's deputies were called to the 38W000 block of Mallard Lake Road at about 11:20 a.m. for a report of a homeowner who had shot an intruder, Gengler said.

The intruder – identified as a 26-year-old St. Charles man – reportedly ran from the residence and was found a few blocks away.

He was taken to Delnor Hospital and was being treated for apparent non life-threatening injuries, Gengler said.

The 43-year-old homeowner was not injured, Gengler said, noting he was alone in the house and has a valid Illinois FOID card.

No charges have been filed, Gengler said, but the sheriff's office has notified the State's Attorney's Office about the investigation.

"We haven't had a chance to talk to the intruder," Gengler said early Monday afternoon. "He's in surgery."

Gengler said the sheriff's office will contact other police agencies, including the St. Charles Police Department, as part of its investigation.

Four residential burglaries have been reported in the city of St. Charles since late February. In one incident, police said a man tried to force entry into a home in the 500 block of North Tyler Road but fled after a resident startled him.

Gengler encourages residents to report anything suspicious or out of the ordinary.
