Truth about morality

Published: Tuesday, March 18, 2014 5:30 a.m. CDT

To the Editor:

I recently saw a letter to the editor titled “Put God in schools.”

In it, posting the Ten Commandments in every classroom and teaching children to observe them was suggested to give kids morality.

I am a 17-year-old who is an atheist. I have morals. I don’t drink. I have never killed anyone. I have never raped anyone. I’ve never stolen a penny from my parents. But how is this possible? I’m an atheist. I have no god.

The reason being is that God and religion are unnecessary for morality.

The letter writer’s argument essentially states the only difference between her and, say, Jeffery Dahmer or Ted Bundy is a belief based off a book written by Bronze age, genocidal, slave owning, misogynistic maniacs who thought the earth was flat.
