Thanks from 1st Way

To the Editor:

This is to acknowledge the tremendous hard work and generosity of the McHenry County Councils of the Knights of Columbus.

Throughout 2013, many of these councils held fundraising events to assist 1st Way Pregnancy Help Center in Johnsburg in achieving its goal of purchasing an ultrasound machine. The Knights’ fundraising, along with a matching donation from its national headquarters, paid for the entire purchase price of a new Samsung ultrasound system.

Empowerment through knowledge is 1st Way’s objective through the use of this technology. Ultrasound, by providing a “window to the womb,” educates young women in crisis pregnancies with the facts of fetal development – enabling them to make informed choices concerning their pregnancies.

1st Way, a nonprofit organization in operation since 1978, offers its clients positive alternatives to abortion. Some of its services include pregnancy testing; providing maternity and baby clothes and diapers; parenting classes; referrals to adoption agencies, the county health department and shelter homes; post-abortion healing information; ongoing emotional support; and a 24-hour hotline. All services are free.

The medical conversion process and training of medical staff to provide ultrasound services will be complete by late spring. Shortly thereafter, 1st Way will be up and running to offer ultrasound scans to some of its clients.

Many thanks to the Knights of Columbus and the individuals, churches and corporations who have supported this effort for making what was once a dream become reality.
