ALGONQUIN – A 19-year-old man has been charged with armed robbery after he used a screwdriver to steal a woman's purse, police said.

Just after 2:20 p.m. Saturday in the Algonquin Commons parking lot, Andy K. Lopez-Carbajal, whose last known address was in Woodstock, threatened a woman with a screwdriver and demanded her purse, according to a news release.

Lopez-Carbajal fled the scene in a white Toyota Camry, police said.

The woman was not hurt and was able to provide officers with a partial license plate number.

A short time later, an off-duty Algonquin officer saw Lopez-Carbajal's vehicle and called 911, according to the news release. Lake in the Hills officers then were able to detain the vehicle in a gas station parking lot.

The stolen purse was recovered in the vehicle, police said.

Algonquin Police took Lopez-Carbajal into custody and charged him with armed robbery, a Class X felony, according to the news release.
