To the Editor:
I remember when I lost a good-paying job and suffered a severe loss in income. I didn’t take a vacation for four years. My wife and I couldn’t justify spending money on a vacation until we were sure we had adjusted to our new level of income.
Not so for our president. With $17 trillion in national debt, trillion dollar budget deficits, an unemployment rate of 13 percent, unfunded liabilities for Social Security and Medicare, Medicaid totaling $100 trillion, and the printing of trillions in worthless paper money, he remains committed to his regal life style.
In 2011, it is estimated that total cost of all vacations and trips was $1.4 billion. This compares with $58 million spent on England’s royal family. The family vacations have included trips to Hawaii, Martha’s Vineyard, Spain, Colorado, Florida, Africa, etc. The expenses include hotels, resorts, 24/7 security and airfare.
After five years as the commander in chief, the Obamas have been on 22 vacations. Obama individually has played a total of 135 rounds of golf, which is on average 13.5 days per round of golf. George W. Bush golfed a total of 24 rounds during his entire presidency.
What is even more astounding than the president’s egregious and gluttonous disregard for hardworking taxpayers is the parade of apologists willing to excuse his behavior.
I guess they believe, “If you got it, flaunt it.”
