FRG woman charged with arson after argument with boyfriend

FOX RIVER GROVE – A woman was charged with arson after allegedly setting a fire Wednesday in the rental unit she shared with her boyfriend, according to Fox River Grove police.

Ashlen E. Beckley, 20, of 107 Center St., had an argument with her boyfriend who then left the house, said Police Chief Ron Lukasik.

The couple continued to communicate with each other via cellphone, Lukasik said.

While the boyfriend, who was not identified, was out of the house, Beckley threw a cigarette into a trash bag with junk mail, Lukasik said. It ignited into a fire that got out of control and trapped Beckley on the second floor of the house.

Beckley then called her boyfriend to tell him the house was on fire. Beckley then called for help and the fire department responded at 2:41 a.m. Wednesday, Lukasik said.

Firefighters had to rescue Beckley, who firefighters

found screaming for help from the second floor, and a dog from the house.

Beckley was treated and released at the scene, said Fox River Grove Fire Chief Robert Kreher. The dog was not injured and there were no firefighter injuries.

The fire was extinguished in about 10 minutes and left about $60,000 in damage, according to the fire department.

Crews from Cary, Barrington Countryside, Algonquin/Lake in the Hills and Huntley assisted during the call.

After the police investigation, Beckley was charged with arson and criminal damage to property.

Beckley is being held in the McHenry County Jail on $80,000 bond.

A hearing is scheduled for Beckley on Monday.
