CHICAGO – Gov. Pat Quinn has ordered state facilities to turn off their lights for one hour as part of a global conservation effort.

Quinn ordered lights to go out Saturday night from 8:30 to 9:30 at many state facilities. They include the Thompson Center and Bilandic Building in Chicago as well as the Illinois State Fairgrounds.

The announcement is part of a global conservation effort called Earth Hour. It's an annual event started by the World Wildlife Fund in 2007. Last year, 7,000 cities participated.

Quinn says it will not only conserve energy, but "shine a light" on the need to protect the planet. His administration often touts its conservation efforts.
