Teen pleads guilty in fatal drag-racing crash

WAUKEGAN — A northern Illinois teenager accused in a drag-racing crash that killed a passenger in his car has pleaded guilty to aggravated driving under the influence of marijuana.

Eighteen-year-old Jeremy Betancourt of Antioch entered the plea Thursday. In return, prosecutors dropped charges of reckless homicide and aggravated street racing. He now faces up to 10 years in prison.

The June 2013 crash killed Antioch High School student Cynthia Perez, who was thrown from the vehicle as it rolled over.

Authorities say Betancourt was racing another driver in Gurnee and lost control of his vehicle.

The other driver pleaded guilty in November to a charge of aggravated street racing. A reckless homicide charge against him was also dropped and he was sentenced to 18 months of periodic imprisonment.
