CRYSTAL LAKE – After roughly 19 months of negotiations, McHenry County College officials and the full-time faculty have come to a tentative agreement on a new contract.
Details of the deal will not be made available until both the McHenry County College Faculty Association and the college's board of trustees approve the contract, said college spokeswoman Christina Haggerty.
“The college is very happy to have reached this agreement with our full-time faculty," Haggerty said. "We look forward to the ratification of the contract."
The agreement comes less than a month after the faculty association filed a notice of its intent to strike after negotiations broke down. College officials had sent information to students and employees on procedures in the event of a work stoppage.
Frustration over the process hit a peak at the March 27 board meeting when faculty members addressed trustees for more than an hour about concerns they had with proposed changes to salary increase opportunities and tuition reimbursements for pursuing advanced degrees and certificates.
Trustees were also asked to sit in on negotiation sessions in an effort to break the gridlock on some issues. At that point, trustees had not been involved in the face-to-face meetings as they had in previous years.
Faculty association representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The board of trustees could approve the contract at its next meeting on April 24 if the union ratifies the deal ahead of that date.
