Power tool for corporations

Published: Tuesday, April 8, 2014 5:30 a.m. CST

To the Editor:

The Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade agreement is being written and negotiated in secret with our Congress in Washington.

Please Google and find out for yourself. Trade officials from the U.S. and 11 Pacific Rim nations are holding closed-door negotiations as soon as possible. The 29 chapters of the draft mostly have nothing to do with trade.

Instead, it will set limits on domestic food safety, health, environmental and other policies. This will replicate the worst of NAFTA.

About 600 corporate U.S. “trade advisers” have full access, but there is no transparency for the public. A few examples have leaked – higher priced medicines, attacks on U.S. environmental and health laws, and a roll back of bank and securities firms’ safeguards.

Get informed at www.exposethetpp.org and www.citizen.org/tpp, or call 202-454-5134. Ask Sens. Dick Durbin and Mark Kirk and our U.S. House members, including Rep. Randy Hultgren, to demand release of the secret negotiating texts and stop this agreement that benefits corporations and hurts the rest of us.

This has long-lasting repercussions and would be very hard to roll back if put in effect. Thank you.
