To the Editor:
Read in your paper the editorial rant against a progressive income tax.
By what distorted logic do you find the just above poverty and worker’s ability to take the family to a restaurant once a month equivalent to a millionaire’s ability to buy a restaurant once a month?
This is what you are saying when you say a flat tax is more fair. You go on to repeat that the rich are job creators. They didn’t get rich by being stupid enough to hire people (create jobs) to provide goods and services for which there is not a sufficient market. If the market’s not there, they will invest their excess in off-shore accounts, etc.
The lower classes, which spend most all of their money on goods and services, are the job creators. If they have the money, someone will hire people to fulfill their needs, just as a smart investment.
Taxing the rich doesn’t kill jobs. Taxing the middle class does. This is why we need more progressive taxes.
It helps everybody to leave more money in the hands of those who will spend it.
