Flaming garbage truck sparks brush fire in Crystal Lake

CRYSTAL LAKE - The flaming contents inside a garbage truck started a brush fire in Crystal Lake on Thursday morning.

Around 6:30 a.m., Crystal Lake police and fire officials responded to a call of flames coming from the top of a garbage truck on Route 14. The truck turned on the northbound Route 31 ramp and emptied its contents on the side of the road.

The flaming garbage then caught the nearby grass on fire and caused a brush fire in front of the U-Haul truck rental store off of Route 31.

Crystal Lake Fire officials had the flames out by 6:50 a.m. but were still on scene extinguishing the smoldering garbage pile around 7 a.m.

The northbound Route 31 ramp was closed while crews cleared the scene.
