To the Editor:
A few random thoughts:
Ever notice the number of cars in a school parking lot hours before or after school starts or ends? Those belong to the dedicated teachers so many think are overpaid.
The first words from Jim Oberweis after his primary win were about a comment Sen. Dick Durbin made several years ago. Mr. Oberweis said that Sen. Durbin called our troops Nazis. If Mr. Oberweis had bothered to listen to everything Sen. Durbin said, he would have noticed what was being read was an FBI report on our torture of prisoners.
What Sen. Durbin said was that if we didn’t know who was being talked about in the report, we would have thought it was about the Nazis. He was right. If you act like a Nazi, you have become one.
If that is uncomfortable for Mr. Oberweis, tough. For him to slur an honorable man like Sen. Durbin because he can’t bother to read the whole report, or try to understand it, is unconscionable and, perhaps, a predictor of what we can expect from him.
Despite being a lefty, I don’t necessarily like new taxes. However, a tax which will cost millionaires an extra $1,750 for every $100,000 they make over $1 million doesn’t seem unreasonable. According to Rep. David McSweeney, this will drive the job creators out of Illinois. Being wealthy doesn’t make you a job creator. Creating jobs does. Give them a tax credit for every full-time job created.
