Guided hikes, live music among Earth Day activities

CRYSTAL LAKE – Kids' crafts, games and puppet shows will be among the Earth Day activities planned at the Prairieview Education Center.

The event, which is co-hosted by the McHenry County Conservation District and the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County, will be at 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Prairieview Education Centerat, 2112 Behan Road in Crystal Lake.

More than 20 booths will cover sustainable practices, and family friendly activities will run throughout the day. Food and beverage vendors will include Duke’s Ale House and Pop’s Premier Kettle Corn.

Puppet shows are scheduled for 12:30 and 2:30 p.m., and guided nature hikes will leave at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Music includes an opening drum circle at 11 a.m., Off Square Music featuring local musicians at 11:30 a.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., and a 1 p.m. performance by Bill Kehl's Earth, Music … Magic!

Visitors also can drop off household items for recycling. Accepted items include electronics, small appliances, Styrofoam, packing peanuts, reuseable bubble wrap, Christmas lights, fluorescent tubes, VHS tapes, CDs, cassettes, batteries and athletic shoes.

Groups that carpool to the event will be entered into a raffle for a free picnic shelter reservation.
