Seniors deserve perks

To the Editor:

Squirrels run around the rafters in the open ceiling. The carpeting is moldy and worn.

We are nestled in a building with other business tenants next to City Hall on Woodstock Street in Crystal Lake.

Who are we? We are the seniors of our community at the senior center Senior Associates.

Our tri-weekly tai chi classes are offered by and held at the senior center. These classes keep us mentally sharp and active, improve our balance to prevent falling, strengthen our bones to combat osteoporosis, improve our immune system and other health benefits.

We pay the full fee. These classes are not subsidized by the city of Crystal Lake. McHenry and Elgin subsidize their senior tai chi classes. At McHenry’s senior center, the classes are free. Elgin residents pay $3 per class at its senior center.

If Crystal Lake can put up a new wakeboard park for our youth, why not put up or find a new senior center facility with subsidized tai chi classes for us Crystal Lake seniors?

We have limited income, yet pay our taxes to the city. We deserve some perks.
