To the Editor:
I was appalled to learn that first-time Republican candidate Steve Reick has been exposed for a series of deceitful actions during his campaign during the primary election for committeeman.
This type of behavior must not be tolerated. Our democracy demands that we have leaders we can trust, even if we disagree with their opinion. We have to be confident that their decisions are made honestly even if unpopular.
By lying about the endorsement of the McHenry County Republican Party, Reick has very quickly failed to live up to this standard. His actions should disqualify him from any office. Should he refuse to do the honorable thing and give up the Republican nomination, then all voters should vote against him and send a strong message that his type of politics is not welcome in McHenry County.
No one should be given a position of public trust who tries to achieve that position by deceiving the voters. Honesty and integrity are not buzz words. They should be the cornerstones of our political process. They should be the rule, not the exception.
