Route 176 open in Wauconda after gas leak

WAUCONDA - Traffic is moving normally after a gas leak shut down a portion of Route 176 in Wauconda for 5 1/2 hours.

Around 7:00 a.m. the Wauconda Fire District responded to a gas leak at Route 176 and Fairfield Road, near the Lake County Forest Preserve.

An excavating crew doing intersection improvements accidentally cut a gas line, according to Wauconda Fire District Battalion Chief Kevin Pyne.

As a safety precaution, Route 176 was closed in both directions at Fairfield Road as vehicles could have been a potential ignition source, Pyne said.

Nicor was able to successfully repair the gas line, and the road was back open around 1 p.m.
