More Chicago police on streets to combat violence

CHICAGO — More Chicago police officers will be patrolling the streets on overtime to combat violent crime that is expected to climb as the weather heats up this summer.

With the summer coming, the department has started canceling days off so officers can work overtime on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays. The effort is a repeat of what the department did last year when an additional 400 officers a day were dispatched daily on overtime to high crime neighborhoods. The Chicago Police Department announced what it calls its summer surge on Wednesday.

This year the department says the effort will result in more officers assigned to parks, housing authority developments and public transit. The park district, Chicago Housing Authority and the Chicago Transit Authority will pay for some of the police overtime.
