Peoria newspaper sues for police report release

Published: Friday, May 2, 2014 11:54 p.m. CDT

PEORIA – The Journal Star newspaper in Peoria wants a judge to order city officials to release a police report written by an officer who alleges misconduct.

The Illinois attorney general’s office has ruled the report isn’t exempt from the state’s Freedom of Information laws. The city claims it is. The newspaper reported the report was written by a sergeant last July and includes allegations of on-duty misconduct.

The city has said it wouldn’t release the report because it relates to ongoing disciplinary issues.

Assistant city attorney Syed Ahmad said Thursday that he hadn’t seen the newspaper’s lawsuit and couldn’t comment.

The newspaper wants a judge to order the city to release the report along with attorney fees and possible civil penalties.
