TV report says Emanuel motorcade ran red lights
CHICAGO — A TV station is reporting that the traffic cameras touted by Mayor Rahm Emanuel have caught his motorcade speeding and running red lights.
WLS-TV says it ran the mayor's plates through a city website that logs traffic camera violations. The station says it found the vehicles ran 17 red lights and were caught speeding three times since 2012.
Critics of the cameras say they're primarily about generating revenue. The mayor has said they're about safety around schools and parks.
The mayor's office responded to the TV report by saying it would instruct his security detail to stop running red lights and speeding.
Spokesman Bill McCaffrey tells the station, "The mayor believes in ensuring safety and that everyone ought to slow down and observe safety rules."
