Illinois Supreme Court to hear arguments in Ottawa

OTTAWA — Illinois Supreme Court justices plan to hear arguments next week in Ottawa's historic courthouse.

The court announced the oral arguments on Thursday. They will be Wednesday at the Third District Appellate Courthouse. The building was completed in 1860. It was built to house the Illinois Supreme Court when justices traveled to three locations, Ottawa, Mount Vernon and Springfield.

The state's high court has been holding oral arguments in Chicago while its regular chambers in Springfield are being renovated.

Chief Justice Rita Garman says the Ottawa hearings are "one way to increase transparency and to demonstrate the judicial process in action."

Teachers and students from local high schools plan to attend the arguments or watch via live online video.

Ottawa is in LaSalle County, about 75 miles southwest of Chicago.
