McHENRY – The driver of a car that hit a tree in McHenry and started on fire died at the scene of the accident, police said.

John Thomas Oliver IV, 39, of McHenry, died at 5:05 p.m. Monday from multiple injuries caused by blunt force trauma, McHenry County Coroner Anne Majewski said.

McHenry police and the McHenry Township Fire Protection District responded to the 1100 block of Curran Road at 4:42 p.m. Monday to reports of an accident, according to a news release.

A 2008 Pontiac G6 had left the roadway and hit a tree, the release said. The car then started on fire. Oliver had been removed from the car by the time emergency responders arrived, and firefighters treated him and put out the vehicle fire, the release said.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash, and a toxicology report is pending, Majewski said.
