Nicholas Sheley, left, talks with his attorney, Jeremy Karlin, during the third day of his trial at the Rock Island County Justice Center on Wednesday, May 21, 2014, in Rock Island, Ill. Sheley is on trial for the June 2008 deaths of Brock Branson, 29, Kilynna Blake, 20, her 2-year-old son, Dayan, and Kenneth Ulve, 25, in Rock Falls.

ROCK ISLAND — A juror has been dismissed in the trial of a man charged with killing four people in a Rock Falls apartment in 2008.

According to The Rock Island Argus, Judge Jeffrey O'Connor dismissed the man Thursday after learning he said he doesn't believe 34-year-old Nicholas Sheley's defense attorney has a case. An alternate juror will take the man's place.

Another juror told the judge that the male juror had made the comment Wednesday outside court.

Sheley attorney Jeremy Karlin initially asked for a mistrial.

Sheley has pleaded not guilty to killing 29-year-old Brock Branson; 20-year-old Kilynna Blake; her 2-year-old son, Dayan; and 25-year-old Kenneth Ulve.

Sheley is serving life sentences for killing two other Illinois residents the same week and is charged with killing an Arkansas couple in Missouri.
