Man hospitalized after being struck with shot put at Elgin track meet

ELGIN – A man has been hospitalized in critical condition after being hit in the head with a 12-pound shot put during a track and field event in suburban Chicago.

The accident took place Friday evening at Elgin High School. The man was hit while a student was warming up before competition.

Elgin Police Cmdr. Glenn Theriault says the 42-year-old man was taken to Presence St. Joseph Hospital.

Police say he might be a coach, but his name and school affiliation could not immediately be determined.
