Ill. woman accused of theft on bogus cancer claims

BELLEVILLE — A southwestern Illinois woman is accused of wrongly collecting donations from hundreds of people she duped into believing she had cancer.

Prosecutors in St. Clair County on Wednesday charged 31-year-old Alissa Jackson of Belleville with two felony theft counts.

Police say an investigation was launched when community members reported their suspicions about Jackson. They say investigators found that Jackson wasn't dying of late-stage ovarian cancer as she had insisted.

Authorities did not immediately disclose how much Jackson allegedly profited from her scheme.

Jackson is jailed on $100,000 bond and was to be arraigned later Wednesday.

Online court records do not show whether Jackson has an attorney. Jackson does not have a listed home telephone number.
