To the Editor:
Clifford Evenson, in his letter to the editor (“America’s success,” June 1), said he believes America’s success was God’s plan.
Based on the Constitution, was it God’s plan to allow slavery? Was it God’s plan to keep women from voting until 1920? Since Jesus is known as the Prince of Peace, was it God’s plan to have America fight in the War of 1812, the Spanish-American War of 1898, World War I, World War II, the Vietnam War, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and, not to forget the most destructive war on American soil, the Civil War, which pitted Americans against Americans?
Was it God’s plan to abuse the American Indians, confiscate their lands and destroy their cultures?
If Mr. Evenson had read The Economist magazine throughout the 2000s until today, he would have found that 90 percent of the time that President George W. Bush was in office, our country had a negative economic rating.
On the other hand, while President Obama has been in office, our country has had a positive economic rating over 90 percent of the time.
Too many people blame President Obama for his lack of effectiveness in office, while they really are blaming him for being black and Democratic and ignoring the fact that Republicans refuse to support the legal president of the United States.
Thomas Jefferson said it clearly: “You have a democracy if you can keep it.” Let’s work together, please.
