CHICAGO (AP) — A federal measure responding to the Veterans Affairs scandal calls for new VA sites, including a new research center at the agency's Chicago-area hospital.
The proposal for the research facility at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Medical Center west of Chicago was included in a bill that U.S. senators announced Thursday.
The measure comes amid furor over long patient waits for care and falsified records covering up the delays at various VA hospitals and clinics. The bill would allow the VA to lease or build 26 medical facilities in 18 states.
A Hines spokeswoman isn't commenting about the possible new research center, citing the pending legislation. But Sen. Dick Durbin's office calls that project much needed, given that Hines' existing research building is nearly a century old.
