Crystal Lake Central grad Lexi Harkins defeated Hui Chong Dofflemyer of Belvidere 2 and 1 to win the 81st Illinois State Women's Amateur Championship at Crestwicke Country Club Friday morning.
In Thursday’s quarterfinal and semifinal matches Harkins won the 18th hole both times to win 1 up. In Friday’s championship match, Harkins didn’t even need the 18th.
The future North Carolina golfer parred the 6th hole to take lead over Dofflemyer and then went 2 up with a birdie on the 11th. Harkins sank a long putt on the 17th to par the hole and end the match before the 18th.
“I’m just really excited to finally win the tournament, and especially one of this caliber,” Harkins said. “I felt I played really well, I made some important putts that kept me in the lead late, so that really helped.”
The Illinois State Amateur is Harkins' first major tournament of the year. She plans on playing in both the Women’s Western Amateur in Pennsylvania and the Women’s North-South Amateur Championship in North Carolina later this summer.
“Going in, obviously you want to win, but I definitely wasn’t expecting this,” Harkins said. “I think this tournament gives me confidence that I know how I can play.”
