4-year-old girl drowns in southern Illinois

PINCKNEYVILLE – A 4-year-old girl has drowned in a swimming pool in the southern Illinois city of Pinckneyville.

Pinckneyville Police Chief John Griffin says the girl was likely under water for more than ten minutes. Authorities call the Monday drowning a "tremendously tragic accident."

Police and ambulance crews performed CPR and the girl was transported to a Pinckneyville hospital and later to a St. Louis hospital.

The girl wasn't immediately identified. Police are investigating.

Pinckneyville is in Perry County about 65 miles southeast of St. Louis.
