Hampshire grad Jake Goebbert got his first shot at a major league at bat in the bottom of the fifth inning on Friday and promptly hit an RBI single to right field off Dodgers pitcher Dan Haren to bring the San Diego Padres to within three runs.

Goebbert, pinch hitting for pitcher Ian Kennedy, was then removed from the game.

Padres manager Bud Black told Padres.com that Goebbert would be in the starting lineup for either Saturday or Sunday's game against the Dodgers. Goebbert took groundballs at first base before Thursday's game and the left-hander would be more likely to start Saturday's game against the right-handed throwing Josh Beckett.

The ball was thrown into the Padres dugout after the pitch for Goebbert to keep it.
