Crystal Lake robbery reported on Facebook is false, police say
CRYSTAL LAKE – Information reported on Facebook that police impersonators robbed a male driver of $100 during a traffic stop in Crystal Lake turned out to be false, police said Tuesday.
Crystal Lake police now are urging residents to refrain from spreading unverified information through social media since it can create "fear, unrest or distrust" among the community, Cmdr. Dan Dziewior said in a news release.
Following the Facebook posting, police interviewed the male driver who supposedly was robbed of $100. Police determined the issue was a miscommunication after the driver told officers that the story behind the Facebook posting had not happened.
Police did not explain the relationship between the driver and Facebook poster.
"While social media and present-day technology has the ability to disseminate information rapidly, always take into account the validity of the source," Dziewior said.
