Moline, Rock Island wary as rivers rise

MOLINE (AP) — The rising Mississippi and Rock rivers apparently are stoking flooding concerns in at least two north-central Illinois cities.

In 40,000-resident Rock Island, the Mississippi as of mid-day Tuesday had risen to more than three feet above flood stage and was expected to swell another two feet before cresting Thursday afternoon.

Nearby Moline had its own issues with floodwaters. The Rock River there as of Tuesday afternoon was seventh-tenths of a foot above flood stage, with expectations it will rise an additional two feet for its expected crest Thursday.

Moline firefighters on Tuesday had to carry one homeowner from his home after it was surrounded by floodwaters.

The city was asking for volunteers Tuesday to help make sandbags.

Messages left Tuesday with Moline administrators weren't immediately returned.
