Berggren: Plenty to do as weather gets warmer

Published: Sunday, July 6, 2014 5:30 a.m. CST

July is heating up as summer sizzles on with festivals and events.

Mark your calendar and head out with the family to one or all of the exciting events taking place this month.

Festivals include Lake in the Hills Rockin’ Rotary Ribfest, July 10-13; the 65th annual McHenry Fiesta Days, July 11-20; Woodstock’s inaugural Summer in the Park, July 18-20; the 29th annual Woodstock Folk Festival, July 20; the 55th annual Algonquin Founders’ Days, July 24-27; and the 28th annual Woodstock Mozart Festival, July 24 through Aug. 10.

For the sports enthusiast, don’t miss the second annual Tour de Crystal Lake in Downtown Crystal Lake on July 20.

As it continues to get warmer, spend your days in the sun. Explore the Three Oaks Recreation Area in Crystal Lake with its pristine waters, natural habitat, incredible fishing and hiking trails. Lounge on the beach all day or rent rowboats, canoes, kayaks, sailboats, paddleboats or paddleboards. Enjoy a grassy picnic, the swimming beach and a small-child playground and spray park.

Spend an evening under the stars at one of the few remaining outdoor drive-in theaters. The McHenry Outdoor Theater shows double features each evening complete with playground toys and the smells of hot dogs and popcorn wafting from the concession stand.
