One hurt in 'suspicious' fire outside Cary

CARY – An early morning house fire that left a man in serious condition was deliberately set, authorities say.

The Cary Fire Protection District got the call at 3:35 a.m. Saturday for a single-story home on fire. When crews arrived, a 58-year-old man was still in the house at 6303 Hillcrest Road in unincorporated McHenry County, according to a news release from the Cary Fire Protection District.

Firefighters conducted a search for the man while beginning to extinguish the fire. Both efforts were hampered by hoarder conditions within the home – which included "large accumulations of possessions and debris," the release said.

The man was found and treated at the scene, then transported in serious condition to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington. Authorities did not release his name.

The blaze was put out within an hour, according to the news release. Crews stayed on the scene for several hours afterward to investigate and complete salvage and overhaul operations.

The fire was "intentionally set and suspicious," according to the release. An investigation is ongoing.

The entire house had smoke and fire damage and was determined to be uninhabitable.

An Illinois State Fire Marshall arson investigator and K-9 unit were requested to the scene.

Cary Fire was assisted by departments from Algonquin-Lake in the Hills, Village of Barrington, Barrington-Countryside, Fox River Grove and Nunda Rural.
