Life Skills education
Cooking up a healthy eating game plan is vital to performance on the field. That concept, along with the art of cooking for a hobby, a career or survival, have been central themes in District 47’s Life Skills Class.
This encore class is offered at our three middle schools as a special course in addition to the students’ core subjects. Our school district prepares all students for life with these survival skills in a 12-week course that offers the students kitchen safety skills, nutritional information tips, and a wide variety of recipes, including more than “cookies and eggs.”
Our curriculum includes pancakes, crepes, waffles, yeast breads, quick-fix snacks, homemade pizza, cookies and eggs. We also blend in the nutritional value of our preparations and stir in a unit on manners and table etiquette.
It is gratifying to know that connection between eating well and performance is making a difference in the lives of the youth in Districts 47 and 155. Need more in this area ... home economics teachers are a classroom away!
