Preserve architectural past

Published: Friday, July 11, 2014 5:30 a.m. CST

My children and I have been riding our bikes around Crystal Lake for many years. The route takes you through Lakewood. There are many beautiful homes and everyone is unique and many are significant for their architecture. A disturbing trend has been going on for awhile. I counted seven teardowns along South Shore Road. Not a home there is a hovel, and I don’t know why they were replaced.

I realize whoever owns the home can do as they please and build a new home, but we need to preserve our architectural past. In my neighborhood in and around downtown Crystal Lake, homes are being bought up, renovated and flipped. It is a wonderful thing.

Lakewood might as well tear down the Schwinn House and the English Cottage.
