Grayslake man Veteran of the Month

GRAYSLAKE – A Grayslake businessman who served on an American submarine during World War II has been selected as the Illinois Veteran of the Month for July.

Robert Krautstrunk joined the Navy in 1944 and served as a radioman in the waning days of the war on the USS Requin.

The Grayslake man was on the sub during its first combat patrol in the Sea of Japan when the war ended and the vessel was recalled.

Krautstrunk's wife of 68 years and their children are expected to attend a Des Plaines ceremony in his honor on Friday. He'll be presented with the award on behalf of Gov. Pat Quinn.
