More efficient government

Published: Thursday, July 17, 2014 5:30 a.m. CDT

To the Editor:

Apparently Jack Franks is the only elected official in McHenry County who cares about the taxpayers enough to hold politicians at all levels of government accountable.

Recently, Rep. Franks, who chaired the Local Government Consolidation Commission, released a set of recommendations to reduce the size of government – recommendations that were universally applauded. Franks also passed laws in Springfield to begin the implementation of the commission’s recommendations.

Unfortunately, in McHenry County, it is business as usual, and the County Board once again has rejected any measure of reform. A committee consisting of several members of the good-old-boy machine voted down an advisory referendum Franks offered that would have allowed each of us to vote on whether the County Board’s size should be reduced.

Residents of McHenry County should stand with Franks and demand a say on how our county is governed. We should tell the County Board loud and clear to reject the will of the crony machine and allow the citizens to vote on reducing the size of the board.

A more efficient county government is possible. We just have to stand up and fight for it.
