Prisoner who escaped Elgin mental health center taken into custody

ELGIN – The prisoner who escaped Wednesday from the Elgin Mental Health Center has been taken into custody, according to a video posted on the Elgin Police Department's Facebook page.

In the video, Elgin Police Chief Jeff Swoboda credited "community input" and "all of you on social media." In the video, Swoboda did not say how, when or where the prisoner, Jesse Vega, had been apprehended.

Earlier Wednesday, Elgin Police Cmdr. Ana Lalley, the department spokesperson, told reporters that the department had been working with officials from "multiple jurisdictions to locate the subject."

Vega, described by police as a 5-foot-8, 160-pound Hispanic man, was identified as the missing prisoner. The Elgin Police Department posted alerts on social media after 9 a.m. Wednesday. The alerts advised that people should call 911 if they see him, and they warned, "DO NOT approach." That post had been shared 2,830 times as of 4:40 p.m. Wednesday.

Lalley said that, from what the Elgin police had learned, Vega was facing a felony warrant out of Lake County, and he was being taken to that area for a court appearance. Lalley said Elgin police had no further information about the charges Vega was facing.

According to the original Facebook alert, Vega escaped from custody in the area of Seneca Street and Dundee Avenue in Elgin. According to the Facebook post, Vega had been seen wearing a blue shirt, blue jeans, white shoes and handcuffs, and he has tattoos on his arms. Lalley said he had been cuffed with his hands in front of his body.
