Business Time Capsule: Helm Hardware in Algonquin

Published: Sunday, July 20, 2014 5:30 a.m. CST

To many, spring means yard and garden work. In time past, it was the hardware store where gardeners found their needed tools and seeds. Helm Hardware located in Algonquin depicts the typical hardware store of the late 19th Century. Located along what is today's Route 31, the store was owned by George Helm between 1869 and 1894. The photo, probably taken in the late 1870s, shows (from left) Will Jayne, Dirk Morton, George Helm and Yank Threadgold.
