Crystal Lake South advances in Phil Lawler Classic

ST. CHARLES – Senior John Constantino singled to left field for the game-winning hit, scoring Collin Chubb in the eighth inning of a 3-2 Crystal Lake South win over St. Charles North in the Phil Lawler Classic.

An inning earlier, a crazy play sent things to extra innings. North had the bases loaded in the seventh with only one out and Kyle Khoury at the plate. Khoury skied a popup just outside the infield dirt behind second base. With the Crystal Lake South infield on the grass, two infielders unsteadily retreated and collided into each other, allowing the ball to drop to the ground.

With all of North’s runners tagging near their respective bases, the second baseman fired the ball to home plate, beating the runner for an out at the plate. After the play at the plate, the head umpire called the infield fly rule – making Khoury out – and the inning was over.

In the top of the eighth, North pitcher Cory Wright attempted to field a slow roller back to the mound.

The southpaw moved to his left and tried to backhand the grounder, but he bobbled it twice and then threw the ball away, allowing the runner to advance to second on the error. After inducing a groundout, Wright gave up a single to left field that ended up scoring the game-winning run.

Michael Avella (2-0) got the win for the Gators (17-5-3), allowing five hits without a run in two innings. Nick Van Witzenburg and Constantino led South, each going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
