CHICAGO – Dozens gathered in Chicago to light candles in memory of those killed in the downing of a Malaysian Airlines jetliner over eastern Ukraine.
The gathering by the Malaysian Club of Chicago got underway late Friday with hundreds of candles to honor the 298 passengers aboard Malaysian Flight 17. Club president Sue Christensen said the downing of the aircraft is not only a tragedy for the Dutch, the Ukrainians and the Malaysians, but for all humanity.
President Barack Obama says evidence indicates Flight 17 was shot down by a surface-to-air missile from an area controlled by Russian-backed separatists. He identified the one U.S. citizen killed as Quinn Lucas Schansman, a Dutch and U.S. citizen.
The Netherlands Consulate General in Chicago will have a condolence register open to the public next week.
