Population loss benefits

To the Editor:

Good for letter writer Stan Perrin (“Cause for celebration,” July 13) for pointing out that a stable or even declining population in McHenry County has benefits and “is a cause for celebration.”

In addition to saving us the cost of such things as unneeded roads and new school buildings, we will enjoy farmland preservation, groundwater protection and maintenance of open space and natural areas – the things that are the basis of our quality of life.

These features, combined with agritourism, outdoor recreation and cultural events such as McHenry Fiesta Days, the County Fair, Woodstock Folk Festival and Crystal Lake’s Raue Center will bring visitors to enjoy – and pay for – their country experiences, without requiring costly infrastructure.
