Lake in the Hills man charged after standoff with police

LAKE IN THE HILLS – A 50-year-old Lake in the Hills man was charged with endangering the life of his teenage son, a day after he barricaded himself inside his home and threatened to kill himself.

Released from the hospital into police custody Thursday morning, Benedicto Rodriguez currently sits in the McHenry County Jail, awaiting a Friday bond hearing. Police charged the Lake in the Hills resident with endangering the life and health of a child, a misdemeanor.

He also was arrested on an outstanding warrant in Spring Grove for violating an order of protection, said Lake in the Hills police Sgt. Mark Smith.

The charges were made after Rodriguez barricaded himself on the first floor of his home along Deerpath Road on Wednesday afternoon and threatened to kill himself, as police and the county's SWAT team tried to negotiate with him.

During the near three-hour standoff, police discovered that Rodriguez's 17-year-old son also was inside the home. Authorities were able to evacuate the teenager without any injury.

The standoff ended after Rodriguez peacefully surrendered to police. No one was injured in the incident.

It was the second time this week area authorities negotiated with a suicidal subject. Two McHenry County Sheriff deputies on Sunday shot a 53-year-old woman in the neck after responding to a suicidal subject report in unincorporated Wonder Lake.

The woman, who police also said threatened to kill herself, was shot after pointing an empty rifle at the deputies.

The woman remains hospitalized, and the deputies have been placed on paid leave.
