To the Editor:
I was getting excited about Bruce Rauner’s gubernatorial bid, but sad to say, the blossom’s coming off the flower.
Mr. Rauner unveiled his plan to right the severely listing ship we call the state of Illinois. His plan includes sales tax on certain professional services, such as lawyer fees, but get this: He also wants to add a sales tax on golf club memberships. Well, I’ve never …
Where does Rauner get off targeting the most afflicted of our society, the golfer? It’s a masochistic disease that often is prone to self-flagellation. I speak from experience as being a recovering golf-aholic.
Golfers display the classic signs of severe addiction. They’ll spend five hours a day humiliating themselves as they try to achieve an unobtainable high – three birdies in a row.
They will return the next day with a smile and a new driver, only to limp back to the clubhouse.
Golfers also are compulsive hoarders, knowing full and well you can only carry 14 clubs in a golf bag, they’ll have 200 clubs in their basement.
Mr. Rauner, golfers are a sorry lot in need of intense counselling, not an undeserved tax burden.
